Focus on keywords
posted by rsylvan, Mar 7, 2010 6:18 AM — 11 commentsAfter talking with the inspection team it seems the most common reason for rejecting an image is simply the lack of relevant keywords.
A minimum of 5 relevant English keywords are required for all submissions.
Although the search function here is very different from the one at iStockphoto, there is an article on iStock that has some excellent keywording advice that can be generalized to be used here at SXC. Specifically, the section on picking keywords.
SXC's own Help File on uploading provides the specific requirements you need to consider, which includes, but is not limited to:
SXC requires you to provide at least 5 but no more than 20 keywords that accurately represent your image. Keywords can consist of either one word (eg. London) or multiple words (eg. Tower Bridge). Keywords have to be separated by commas (eg. London,Tower Bridge).
Please help the people who want to find your photos by adding the right keywords when you upload.

1. posted by cool7331, Apr 11, 2010 5:53 PMIt would be still great to know, what you specifically dislike on the keywords choosen by the uploader. The standard comment which renders in the readers' eye to something like "man, your keywords are crap, try again" is neither helpful nor motivating. It's like failing the same test again and again just because nobody tells you what you made wrong last time. Kinda frustrating that ...

BTW, how can you correctly determine, whether or not the keryword isaccuratelyrepresenting the image? Who made the photo? You? Or the uploader? So who probably knows better, what's accurate? You or the uploader?

Perhaps you could post links to the some of the images in question over in the Policy Question forum?

Is there a way to incorporate tags into the images based on keywords?

Jeffrey023, I'm not sure what you mean. Can you clarify?
NY-Lawyer, Contributors are required to include a minimum of 5 relevant English keywords for each submission.

I would agree, indeed your keywords are infact vital.

Keywords need to be intutive to the image. It isn't rocket sience. What I dislike is when I search for an image and find photos that in no conceptual way relate to the word. Is there a way to remove or flag a keyword for a given photo?

I found that the best way for proper keywords when uploading a picture (that is when you lack imagination) is to search for a similar picture using a main keyword (you really can't miss that -e.g. cloud, face, tree), then collecting the most relevant to your composition from the pictures you have seen.
It works for me...

For the pupil part where you say "Draw circle and feather 1 px," the tutorial is not clear.
Do not use the Shape tool. Instead, use the Elliptical Marquee tool and draw a circle. Then in the upper menu, go to Select > Modify > Feather. Choose 1px.
Then you can use the Paint Bucket tool to fill with black.
