Rejected Photo #1

posted by gomi, Apr 26, 2006 4:30 AM — 11 comments

This is a photo that was recently rejected with the reason of being too dark, with little light. Well, duh! I was going for the silhouettes and you can't get that with light everywhere.

That's a nice picture (my opinion), it is dark, but look good that way :)
O well, I guess they know better.

Don't worry, my friend...! Sometimes our photos that we think are good, are rejected by SXC's stuff. Any times are right rejects, other times are wrong rejects... But we must accept SXC decision and try always to do better. It's the right thing, I think. ;-)
I'm sure that it will go better next time, with next photo! Bye! :-)

Photo has interesting elements.
Too bad is cannot be downloaded at Flickr full size so that it can be "played with" to see what jumps out.

As for almost fawning deferrence to approvers, I do not happen to agree. Good photos are oftentimes rejected for reasons that are specious, and bad photos are oftentimes accepted for reasons that are not readily apparent. A much, much better gauge of what is a good photo can be seen by searching the site for photos in various categories that have large download numbers. That means users see something useful in the photo, and users are, after all, the final decision makers for what is good and what is not.

I like it, try touching it up a bit in PS to make it a little brighter lol, but it would be hard to make it light enough for them to accept it, but dark enough to maintain the look and fell

From a designers point of view, I woudn't use an image like this, there is too much going on. Silhouettes are usefull when they are more close up.

I find it dark too, and I think you can't see what in the photo because has to many elements and the silhuettes are everywhere but in small size.

Its a nice picture, I like dark pictures though, guess it is the dreary feelings I have about the world these days.

Would be interesting to lighten it a bit, and sepia tone it, to make it look like an old time photo.

I love this picture and think it would great cropped in different areas to really make use of the effect you were going for.

I think the darkness accentuates the light and the shadows bring it to life.

Keep the good work up !

i get the point you want to make, but i think you forgot to give the viewer an actual point on focus.

and considering you are after the silhouettes, i see mostly heads and not enough action to justify this as silhouette portraits.

nice texture and tone though.

Lovely Composition. We cant deny the beauty of the picture. Infact SXC has some rules for stock photographs & they want everything will be well lit. tahst the other side of the story.
by the way ur images are rocking. Loving it. Bravo!

For the pupil part where you say "Draw circle and feather 1 px," the tutorial is not clear.

Do not use the Shape tool. Instead, use the Elliptical Marquee tool and draw a circle. Then in the upper menu, go to Select > Modify > Feather. Choose 1px.

Then you can use the Paint Bucket tool to fill with black.
