Converting color to black and white 2

posted by gerbrak, Oct 19, 2006 8:52 PM — 10 comments

Open your photo

Choose Image/mode/lab color

Go to the channels palette and select the Lightness channel

Go to Image/Mode and choose Grayscale.

When photoshop asks you if you want to discard the other channels click OK

To fine tune your image, go to the layers palette and duplicate the background layer (Control-J).
Now you can experiment with the different blend modes and the opacity until you like what you have.

Flatten your image, save your file and you're done!

(If you want to add some color be sure to go to Image/Mode and choose RGB Color before saving your file)

Very useful and nicely written tut. I've tried your method and I'm really happy with it. All new duotone pics from my gallery are converted this way.
Thank you
Maciek

For the pupil part where you say "Draw circle and feather 1 px," the tutorial is not clear.

Do not use the Shape tool. Instead, use the Elliptical Marquee tool and draw a circle. Then in the upper menu, go to Select > Modify > Feather. Choose 1px.

Then you can use the Paint Bucket tool to fill with black.
