Earth Hour : 31 March 2007

posted by buzzybee, Mar 10, 2007 2:34 AM — 0 comments

At 7:30pm on Saturday 31 March, Sydneysiders are being invited to switch their lights off for one hour as a sign of their committment to the environment and in reducing global warming. It is a demonstration on how small things can make a huge difference for our world.

As photographers we too can do things for the environment. If you haven't already made the move to digital, then seriously think about it when finances allow ... Film, the canisters it comes in, the chemicals used to develop it and the paper used to print the full 24 or 36 prints you have had processed, all are cut out of the equation when you go digital. Their reduction in use greatly help the environment.

If you need to use a film camera, make sure you recycle the plastic canisters. Get the processing lab to print out a contact sheet so you print only the best ones. Make sure your lab disposes of the chemicals in an environmentally friendly way, or take your work somewhere else.

If you use a digital camera, again only print the best photos and store the rest on your computer system. Remember also when you charge the batteries to unplug the charger when it's not in use!

Above all, your camera is a powerful tool to capture the beauty of our world and encourage other people that it is worth preserving.

With small initiatives, together we can make a huge difference.

If you live outside of Sydney, you can still show your support from anywhere in the world by joining us and turning off your lights at 7.30pm local time. For more information visit Earth Hour.

For the pupil part where you say "Draw circle and feather 1 px," the tutorial is not clear.

Do not use the Shape tool. Instead, use the Elliptical Marquee tool and draw a circle. Then in the upper menu, go to Select > Modify > Feather. Choose 1px.

Then you can use the Paint Bucket tool to fill with black.
