@2 - google those words - aperture, ISO and White Balance... or check the other tutorials on this site.

They are three key concepts in photography whether digital or film(check also Shutter Speed). A point and shoot digital camera may or may not have some of these things in its manual settings, but if you're serious about photography, you'll want to learn about them.

Thanks Carlos for the post - sometimes it's the simplest things that can have the greatest wow factor...

Try putting a very dim light on a subject in frame (and keep them very still) so that they will be fully exposed in the final picture, then draw "Wings" on them with light...

I'll have to try that one myself, but my kids won't sit still long enough!!

Another great way to mix things up with this effect is to have somebody standing still against a black background (or in the dark) and draw things around them for them to interact with.

A group of friends and I tried this and got some really stunning results using just the torch made into a friend's mobile!

We tried it backed onto a busy road and got the lights streaming past (light lines - google it) which was a massive bonus.

hey... actually i tried some thing like this but not writing...
i stay next to an airport. so it was really dark that night and moon was out of frame. i used 10 sec shutter and f11 (thats all my cam allows me) and an ISO of 80. i clicked wen a plane took off. well now u can guess what the resuld would be. If u have an airport near any mnay flights on the sky, then try this out in the night. u will get amazing result.

well, actually when u do that u can also switch your ISO exposure (ie. 100 with 10s) to avoid some ugly things, like the color of some places whit more light or specially lights sources like cars lights or house lights.
In others words, the higher the exposure u have (400, 600 800) the more sensitive your shot will be, and the less time youll need to take the picture. enjoy.

I would think that would be okay... but would you not be better off making some pointless lines in the air then turning those lines into a brush?. that way it makes everything eaiser.

using this technique you can make really cool night/evening pictures!

Tripod + camera + flashlight outdoors, and light up a car, flower, tree or something, when everything else is dark.
